BarCamp
A presentation underway

We are getting closer to announcing the project I have been working on so I went into socializing mode on friday and popped down to the monthly Barcamp - Minibar event. The overall plan was to start making some contacts and also to get some feedback on an offshoot project.

For those who don’t know about BarCamp here is how it is described on the Wiki.

BarCamp s an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants.

Free Beer

I believe around 100 people turned up on Friday and quickly got stuck into the Free Beer that was on offer as part of the event. I was lucky enough to meet up with David Bausola who was kind enough to introduce me to a few of the key figures attending the event. So big thanks to you David!

Paul Birch did a short presentation about SeedCamp and asked the attending crowd who would be applying. I was very surprised when around 50% of those watching put their hands up! So it seems Paul and Co have a lot of work in the initial filtering of applicants to do.

Ian Forrester (of BBC Backstage note) was trying to find a flat mate by showing off his 2 TeraBytes of data storage and general networked up house to try and tempt other geeks to join him.

David tried to do a presentation on Where are the Joneses but was let down by the fact that they could not hook up the sound from the laptop to the loudspeakers (100+ geeks was obviously not enough). What is it?

Where are the Joneses is an interactive fictional comedy. This means that you can influence the storyline. Watch the videos and push the story forward any way you want to. You can submit scripts, edit future scripts, design characters all at the Where Are The Joneses wiki.

Drupal Crew
The Drupal Crew

I was also lucky enough to meet up with some of the Drupal crew who were hanging out and discussing the way forward of Drupal and PHP in general.

One last thing I have put up a holding page for our ‘to be announced project’ - http://www.scoursh.com/ although we will not be announcing it yet I would be interested in peoples feedback on the logo itself.

  1. Hi Nick

Great to meet you too. I’ll be watching the development of Scoursh very closely - it’s a superb piece of work.

  3. Some logo feedback as requested, let’s start from the bottom up…
(sorry about the harshness in advance, please don’t take offense)

The name of the business is done in a very basic and much overused “glass” affect for which there exists around 100 photoshop tutorials. In my opinion you can stick with the same feel but move away from classic toward something more creative. Also note that the “glass” effect isn’t carried over to the rest of the logo where it is only gradients.

The next issue to catch my eye is the width of the white border which is different than on the text. The width is good for the board but not for the person. It throws the extremities into sharp relief which is where you focus (i.e. feet and hands). The Nike swoosh-esk shape of the limbs is also very distracting and again brings too much attention to the extremities. Of minor note, there is some perspective issues with the feet of the board.

Perhaps I might suggest holding a logo contest on your blog. “Take the look and feel of the current logo and transform it into something worthy of LogoPond”. It would be a nice free way to get graphic designers to create a bunch of logos for you.

To contrast the above: I very much enjoy your blog as I am moving into management slowly from my current web programming role. I’ve added you in Google Reader and definitely starred a few of your articles. Keep up the great work.
