I got home at 2am last night. I left the Zend conference at 9pm but found that there had been some form of fatality on the railway and that all trains had been cancelled and the station authorities were keeping tight lipped about what was going on and when we could expect trains to run or in fact any other solutions they could cobble together. I took the initiative to cross the whole of london to Waterloo station. Apart from being tired from standing and talking (yes all those canapes and wine are very tiring) the journey only another 30 minutes (including dodgying weirdos). The train from Waterloo goes a completely bonkers route and takes 1 hour 20 rather than the 30 minutes, as it stops at every minor town/village/hut/hole in ground.
I get to Reading station and (after the advice of the conductor on my train) go and accost the station master to demand a free taxi ride home. The station master must also have been having a bad day as he took offence to me swearing at him (it is now 1am) and tersly points out that there is in fact a train to Cholsey (my final destination) but it is delayed and I will have to wait another 45 minutes. I point out that this would mean getting home at 2am and that in my part of countryside taxis stop running at midnight and everyone is sound asleep so I would then need to walk for an hour from the train station. My pleas fell up deaf ears so apart from a rambling rant I decided to then take my life into my own hands and attempt to find a taxi that would not wish to fleece me for every penny.
Anyway, apart from a 100mph taxi ride home (short but terrifying) I got home and collapsed. I did have a very good conference and I will post up something given time constraints as the competition judging is likely to take a fair amount of my spare time this week. But I would like to say hello to anyone I spoke at the conference and thanks to Zend for inviting me along. I will just make mention that I did manage to corner Zeev and got a few interesting titbits from him on the future direction of the platform and also managed to raise a few concerns regarding PHP 5 adoption.

Sounds like a nightmare journey back. Pete and I went to a gig in London after leaving the conference around eight o’clock until eleven and we were still home before you. Well, it was easy for me as I stayed in London but Pete went home to Gatwick and got in around half past midnight.
I suddenly thought of you this morning when one of my development team came to see me with regards to a page with which we are experiencing massive performance problems. The page in question is taking somewhere around three minutes to load and we’re analysing why.
Well, first round of diagnosis is to see what’s going on and after you telling me of your friend being horrified at seeing a page use 97 queries to be created, I thought I’d drop you this line to say that the data tree we’re rendering is made up using…. drum roll…..
Three hundred and forty three thousand, three hundred and three (343303) queries.
I believe that gets me the high score. I expect a Zend pen in the post shortly. Ha ha!
