Digg Traffic vs Google Traffic or “Stating the bleedin’ obvious”

I was just reading the Chitika blog after finding the article linked from Digg. It’s a short article showing that traffic from Digg is much less likely to click adverts than google. The relevant data being Google CTR is 0.97% vs Digg at 0.30% which although an interesting number it should not shock anyone. Google has spent years working on targeted advertising and with adsense/adwords it has allowed advertisers to target adverts via keywords.
Anyone who has used googles advertising tools for placement will know the statistical data you get is quite overwhelming and allows amazing levels of control on the target demographic. This has meant that a lot of customers have become extremely talented at getting adverts to match to customers requirements when a set of keywords are entered.
Compared to this we have Digg which has a single advert and content that is categorised. I am sure Digg does do some targeting based upon the category being viewed but this is a very vague matching in comparison to what google is doing. So a ratio of 0.97% to 0.30% to me is bleeding obvious. Do we really think the average human that goes to Digg is so different to those on google? of course not.

I have also had a few emails from people agreeing, but I suppose to the masses it makes a interesting headline. I’m working on a Google post which is related, should hopefully post it over the weekend and watch the flames..
