An introduction to programming by accident

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I thought I would start my blog by explaining the title and give you some idea of my background which if I am lucky may give you reason to come back in some sort of future to see what else I have accidentally learnt.

I have been a programmer of one sort or another since being a small wee boy of 9 years of age and since then I have learnt a whole load of stuff and on the main its been purely by accident. To give you an early example one of my first forays into programming was on my beloved ZX81 I had managed to type in some zillion line BASIC program from a magazine which purported to being a ‘flight sim’. Which in fact turned out to be a rotating (cough) line and some dots that started in the centre of the screen and accelerated downwards to give the impression of speed/movement/whoknows. Anyway long story/short I randomly changed some values on a few of the lines to see what would happen; the result, as you can imagine was quite erratic in so much as I had turned it from looking like a poor mans flight sim into a very poor mans star field. This being in my mind as a child a major success I probably celebrated with a glass of milk and a packet of chocolate biscuits.

But to return to the original point this probably started me out on my path towards what I loosely call “My career” which has largely been typified as being a sequence of self taught languages interspersed by lessons of how to not annoy your colleges when they make you into their manager.

So learning in my mind is just one accident after another and as long as you don’t fatally crash all is well and good. I will hopefully (and I certainly give no warranty or guarantee) that future posts will give some advice on the pitfalls of programming and or the management of programming and programmers.
